Multilingualism and mentalizing abilities in adults

Abstract Bilingual children have better Theory-of-Mind compared to monolingual children, but comparatively little research has examined whether this advantage in social cognitive ability also applies adults. The current study investigated multilingual status and/or number of known languages predicts performance on a mentalizing task large sample adult participants. Multilingualism was decomposed based English is the first language or not. All analyses controlled for well-known predictors mentalizing, such as gender, same-race bias, and years fluency. We found U-shaped trend, that monolinguals multilinguals did not differ much their ability, bilinguals performed worse than monolinguals. Our builds upon past work by examining participants, measuring crucial aspect cognition previously been unexplored, controlling several nuisance variables, investigating multilingualism leads additional benefits abilities beyond bilingualism.
